Here are the official high temperatures for Sunday, December 2nd. You may be wondering when we saw temperatures in the 60s on Sunday.
Most people may think the high on Sunday in Topeka was more along the lines of the 36 degrees that Concordia saw, or maybe even colder than that. Well, you are not crazy. Temperatures Sunday afternoon were in the mid 30s. However, last night at midnight the temperature was 65 degrees. Then a cold front moved through and dropped our temperatures by over 30 degrees. We call this a "midnight high." The official high and low temperatures for a date come from (as the name suggest) the highest or lowest temperature recorded at Topeka's Billard Airport at anytime from Midnight to Midnight. Every once in awhile a strong cold front will move through in the early morning hours (before sunrise) and drop our temperatures throughout the rest of the day. This is what happened on Sunday. While most people will remember Sunday as a cold and windy day, the official records will show Sunday as a warm day with a high temperature of 65 degrees. The low will also be interesting. As I write this on Sunday afternoon, so far our lowest temperature has been 32 degrees. It is likely that by 11:59PM our temps will be in the mid 20s, so that will be our recorded low temperature. Interesting stuff, at least to a weatherman.
