CITY HALL -- Burn permit applications will be accepted beginning Friday, October 1st for the fall open burning season which runs October 15th through November 30th this year.

The City allows open burning of garden debris, brush and tree limbs/branches twice a year, once in the fall and the other in the spring from April 15 through May 31. Application for the fall burning season will be accepted through the last Wednesday of November.

Applications are available online at www.topeka.org. Click on City Services A-Z, then click on the Burning Permit link. For those without computer access, call 368-4000 and Fire Department staff will assist in making an application online.

Topeka Fire Department Inspectors will begin inspecting burn sites Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. If an individual is not home the day of the site inspection, a card will be left and the permit will be returned to the office. Individuals can pick up their permit at the Topeka Fire Department Administrative Offices, located at 324 SE Jefferson, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Permit applications received between Oct. 1 and the beginning of the burn season, Oct. 15, will be inspected on or before 3 p.m. on Oct. 15. During this early inspection time and due to the large number of applications, Fire Inspectors can’t provide individuals with a specific date or time of inspections. Those issued a permit between Oct. 1 and Oct. 15 can’t burn debris until the burning season begins on Oct. 15th.

Burn sites will only be inspected on Thursdays after the 15th of October. Applicants can request which Thursday they would like the inspection made.

·Open Burning will only be allowed during the set time period
·You do not have to be home for a permit to be approved
·If you are not home the approved permit will be returned to the office and must be picked up prior to burning.
·Material to be burned is required to be stacked and placed in the area you intend to do the burning, BEFORE the site inspection. If not, the permit may be disapproved and applicants must reapply.

For more information, contact the Topeka Fire Department Prevention Office at 368-4026 and ask to speak with an Inspector.
