Walk for children with apraxia of speech

9:30am

Topeka
SEPTEMBER WALK WILL RAISE AWARENESS FOR CHILDREN WITH APRAXIA
Topeka Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech

TOPEKA, KS– (AUGUST 1, 2013) – Monica Parsel of Topeka is coordinating the Topeka Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech event on Saturday, September 7 at Lake Shawnee. All proceeds will benefit important apraxia programs and research of the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA).

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a very challenging and complicated neurological speech disorder in children. This little known disorder makes it difficult or impossible for children to accurately produce sounds, syllables, and/or words despite having a good understanding of language. The Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech® is held as a means to heighten awareness and funding.

“Imagine living in a world where you can’t communicate. A world where no one can understand you and every word you want to say takes months of practice to perfect. Now imagine being told that this world is the one your child is living in, yet no one can explain why. I decided to coordinate this walk in honor of my three year old son, Kellan, and to support all of the children who struggle daily with CAS. I hope to raise awareness about this rare speech disorder that affects about one in 1,000 children,” says Mrs. Parsel.

The Topeka Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech is open to all adults and children. Those who register by August 11th will receive an official Walk for Children with Apraxia® T-shirt in their size on walk day. On-site registration and check-in on September 7th begins at 9:30 AM, with the Walk starting at 10:30 AM. Anyone interested in registering, making a donation, or learning more about the event can contact monicaparsel@hotmail.com or visit the event website at http://secure.apraxia-kids.org/topekawalk.
