"Waste Land" Art Film Series by Vik Muniz

WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys to the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There he collaborates with some “catadores,” self-designated pickers of recyclable materials, to create their portraits out of garbage, revealing both their dignity and despair as they begin to re-imagine their lives.

Banksy’s EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP tells the inside story of Street Art. A brutal and revealing account of what happens when fame, money, and vandalism collide, the film follows an eccentric shopkeeper turned amateur filmmaker as he videos many of the world’s most infamous graffiti artists. Then Banksy turns the camera back on the filmmaker with wildly unexpected results.

Canstruction will exhibit amazing, 10 x 10 feet structures made entirely of cans of food and other non-perishables. The structures will be made by seven teams: Treanor Architects, HTK Architects, Tevis Architects, Barlett and West Engineers, Architect One, Schwerdt Design Group, Inc., and the American Institute of Architecture Student Chapter from K-State. With the exception of the AIA team, all of the teams are from Topeka. When the exhibit closes, the cans are donated to Harvesters, the Community Food Network, which supplies area food banks. Canstruction is an international program of the Society of Design Administration. Local sponsors of the event are Hy-Vee, Inc., Advisors Excel, and Knox Signs and Graphics. Structures will be given awards, including a People’s Choice Award voted on by visitors to the exhibition. The Mulvane Art Museum is open from 10-7 Tuesdays, 10-5 Wednesday-Friday, and 1-4 Saturday and Sunday.

Asbury Youth Empowerment Summer Academy

What’s Up For Summer? The coolest summer program ever!!
The Asbury Youth Empowerment Summer Academy will open the doors on June 2, 2014. The program is free and will be in operation Monday through Friday from 8 am to 3 pm. We plan to keep our kids connected and focused on core academic subjects of math and reading through structured learning activities. Other activities include special speakers, Topeka Shawnee County Public Library programs, and activities, promoting STEM, arts, crafts, and exciting weekly field trips.
Applications can be picked up at Asbury Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, 1196 SW Buchanan Topeka, KS starting April 9. Space and availability is limited so please return your applications as soon as possible.
