Kansas Connections Academy Free Family Information Session

Kansas Connections Academy, a tuition-free K-12 virtual public school, will host a free information session in Manhattan for families interested in learning about its online program and individualized approach to education. Kansas Connections Academy serves students throughout the state, and is operated in partnership with the Elkhart Unified School District 218.
The information session will provide families with an opportunity to meet with a Connections Academy teacher, thoroughly explore the school’s program and curriculum, and learn about the enrollment process. Other topics covered include: how teachers interact with students in the virtual environment, personalized learning opportunities including options for accelerated learning and gifted programs, college preparation, socialization, the role of the parent or other Learning Coach, and the use of technology. Families unable to attend this session are encouraged to attend one of our online information sessions. Canstruction will exhibit amazing, 10 x 10 feet structures made entirely of cans of food and other non-perishables. The structures will be made by seven teams: Treanor Architects, HTK Architects, Tevis Architects, Barlett and West Engineers, Architect One, Schwerdt Design Group, Inc., and the American Institute of Architecture Student Chapter from K-State. With the exception of the AIA team, all of the teams are from Topeka. When the exhibit closes, the cans are donated to Harvesters, the Community Food Network, which supplies area food banks. Canstruction is an international program of the Society of Design Administration. Local sponsors of the event are Hy-Vee, Inc., Advisors Excel, and Knox Signs and Graphics. Structures will be given awards, including a People’s Choice Award voted on by visitors to the exhibition. The Mulvane Art Museum is open from 10-7 Tuesdays, 10-5 Wednesday-Friday, and 1-4 Saturday and Sunday.

What’s Up For Summer? The coolest summer program ever!!
The Asbury Youth Empowerment Summer Academy will open the doors on June 2, 2014. The program is free and will be in operation Monday through Friday from 8 am to 3 pm. We plan to keep our kids connected and focused on core academic subjects of math and reading through structured learning activities. Other activities include special speakers, Topeka Shawnee County Public Library programs, and activities, promoting STEM, arts, crafts, and exciting weekly field trips.
Applications can be picked up at Asbury Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, 1196 SW Buchanan Topeka, KS starting April 9. Space and availability is limited so please return your applications as soon as possible.
