Described as a "true" cross country course, more than 60 runners toed the starting line to take on the 5k challenge of Iliff Commons Saturday morning in the Sunflower State Games.
22-year old Brock Ternes took the men's overall title in 17:58. The recent Emporia State graduate plans to use his final year of college eligibility running at KU this fall.
16-year old Avery Clifton took the women's overall title in 21:16. The high school junior plans to compete in cross country for the first time this fall at Washburn Rural High School.
Dr. Doug and Dorothy Iliff created the 5k trail through their property, just west of K4 off NE 31st, just northeast of Topeka. Dr. Iliff says they want to encourage physical fitness. They maintain the train and keep it open for people to use for walking and running.
13's Melissa Brunner took the gold medal in the prime division (ages 18-34), while 13 News producer Amanda Lanum took the silver in the same division.
A one-mile fitness walk followed the run. Participants walked a one-mile route on the cross country trails. They had their fitness level checked afterward, encouraging them to stick with a physical activity program.
