As a kid growing up in North Florida watching television coverage of major news events like the Kennedy assassination, or the triumphs of our space program, I knew early on that television news was a dream career. I get to live out that dream every day, now going on 30 years in radio and television.. half of that time here at WIBW-TV. I had already landed my first radio station job in Gainesville, at the University of Florida, just before my high school graduation. I spent five wonderful years at WRUF during my college years. The highlight of that time was receiving the station's top student honors from famed sportscaster Red Barber. I'll never forget that moment. I learned the ropes of hosting radio talk shows (Soon-to-be President Jimmy Carter was one of my guests for a whole hour!) I quickly found I had a knack for telling feature stories on television, sharing stories about interesting people. I worked at stations in Jacksonville and Orlando, tried my hand at sports in Richmond, Virginia.. and was even a commentator for the Washburn Ichabods during the first few months V-100 was on the air in 1978.
These days, I still love anchoring sports on 13 News Radio.. to keep my hand in the radio part of the business.. By 1981, I returned to Gainesville, Florida for my first official news anchoring job. From there it was on to the Springfield/ Branson, Missouri area.. where I met my wife Sheila (she was one of my television news interview guests!) Moving to WIBW in 1990, we now have two wonderful children of our own. My son is talking up the idea of becoming a sportscaster, too! As new generations of outstanding journalism students graduate and arrive at 13 News to begin their careers with Melissa Brunner and me, we marvel at the technical wonders of television and internet while sticking to our news principles of being fair, being right.. and telling stories that captivate our viewers.
