From a network news channel in the big apple to simulated battlefields and marching in combat boots, Captain Stephanie Ramos’ career in both the Army and journalism have taken her from coast to coast and even overseas. Pursuing her dream to be a TV reporter Stephanie joined WIBW 13 News In October 2007. Here in the sunflower state she is excited to see all of her ambitions validated.

Stephanie was born and raised in New York City. She came to Topeka by way of Columbia, South Carolina where she was the assignment editor for the NBC affiliate, WIS.

Stephanie Ramos joined the U.S. Army Reserves in April 2002. She attended Basic Combat Training also known as boot camp the summer of 2002 as an enlisted Soldier. That following year she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism from Iona College and returned to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri to complete the advanced individual training course as a chemical specialist. Stephanie was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant May 2005 as she received her Master of Arts degree in Media Studies from Iona College. During this time she was a part of a variety of different Army Reserve Units in New York City, and was accepted into the highly competitive NBC page program. In April 2006 she attended the Officer Basic Course in Columbia, South Carolina, Fort Jackson. In October 2007 she moved to Topeka, Kansas to advance her journalism career, reporting during the weekdays and anchoring on the weekends. One year later she was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq. In Iraq, she held the position of historical ambassador on Camp Slayer on Victory Base Complex.

She was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. Among those Captain Ramos holds the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star.

While in Iraq She continued to act as a journalist whenever she could, recording every available moment, and upon her return, produced a half hour special which aired on WIBW, chronicling her candid year “To Baghdad And Back”.

She continues to serve her country in the reserves while also working as a TV news reporter/anchor. Telling the stories of the community is invaluable opportunity. If you have anything to share she says, “email away!”
