Washburn Remains Perfect With 44-21 At Southwest Baptist

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The No.15 Washburn Ichabods improved to 5-0 on the season pounding out nearly 500 yards of offense and a stiff defense win in a 44-21 win at Southwest Baptist.

Washburn led from start to finish scoring on their first drive when Mitch Buhler connected with Connor Crimmins on a 10-yard touchdown pass with 11:22 left in the first quarter. Washburn's Aaron Hummert hitWillie Williams on a fake punt for 32 yards keeping the drive alive.

Washburn forced a punt on the next SBU possession and Cody Heiman, who moved from linebacker to running back and had three days of practice on offense, scored the first of two touchdowns on the day as he would finish with a game-high 132 yards on 26 carries while averaging 5.1 yards per carry. His score put the Ichabods up 14-0 after the PAT.

SBU got on the board after Johnathan Drury picked off a Buhler pass and returned it 26 yards for a score.

Washburn came right back with a 11-play, 81-yard drive of their own as Buhler capped the drive with a 1-yard run with 3:44 to play in the first half as the Ichabods took a 21-7 lead into the half.

SBU scored the first points of the second half after taking advantage of a fumble on a punt return and cut the lead to seven at 21-14 with 11:15 to play in the third quarter.

Jaime Myers returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to the SBU 2-yard line, but Washburn could not score but settled for a 27-yard field goal by Justin Linn with 10:07 left in the third.

SBU turned the ball over on downs after driving to the Ichabods' 25-yard line and then Washburn's pushed the lead to 31-14 after a Heiman 1-yard run with 3:39 to play in the third quarter.

The Ichabods added to their lead when Mitch Buhler hit brother Matt Buhler for a 33-yard strike with 9:49 to play in the game stretching the lead to 38-14. SBU would score once more cutting the lead to 38-21.

Mark Kolmer wrapped up the scoring with a 12-yard rush with 3:18 left finalizing the score at 44-21 in Washburn's last trip to Boilvar playing as the Bearcats are leaving the MIAA for the Great Lakes Valley Conference in football only at the end of the season.

Heiman led all rushers with 132 yards and two scores while Kolmer had 34 yards on nine carries. Mitch Buhler was 14 of 26 for 261 yards and two scores. Tore' Hurst had five catches for 111 yards to led the Ichabod receivers.

Defensively, the Ichabods were led by Isaac Wright who had nine tackles. Washburn had three sacks for 18 yards as Cameron Jackson had two for Washburn and also recording three tackles for loss for 13 yards.

The Ichabods finished with 489 yards on 71 plays while the Bearcats were limited to 243 yards on 62 plays. Washburn had 21 first downs compared to 13 for SBU. The Ichabods also had 44 carries for 196 yards while the Ichabod defense held the Bearcats to 13 yards on 24 carries.
