Former player returning to coach alongside McHenry

Washburn women's basketball coach Ron McHenry announced Monday that former player Brette (Ulsaker) Herber will return to Washburn as the team's top assistant coach.

Herber will begin her duties Wednesday, replacing Jim Biggs after the two-year coach left the program this summer.

She played for Washburn for three seasons from 2007-08 to 2009-10 and she earned a bachelor's degree in political science with a minor in history from Washburn in 2011. Herber spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa Western Community College where she helped coach the Reivers to a 46-18 record. She coached the guards and assisted with practice plans while coordinating the team's weights and conditioning program.

"Brette gained great experience coaching at Iowa Western under longtime coach Jim Turgeon," McHenry said. "We're excited about getting her back here on our bench and bringing her skills and knowledge to our program."

Herber was a student assistant coach at Washburn in 2010-11 as she finished her degree.

She was named the MIAA's defensive player of the year in 2009-10 and she helped Washburn to an 80-16 record in three years. The team won MIAA regular season titles in 2007-08 and 2009-10 and won MIAA tournament titles in 2008-09 and 2009-10. The team went to the NCAA tournament all three years and made an Elite 8 appearance in 2007-08.

Herber is a native of McPherson, Kan., and a graduate of McPherson High School. She played her freshman year at Utah before coming to Washburn. Her brother, Christian Ulsaker, will be a junior on the men's basketball team this year.
