February 5, 2014-The #7 Lady Hornets closed the game on a 16-3 run to post a 69-63 win at Washburn on Wednesday night. Emporia State trailed by as many as 17 in the second half before rallying for their fourth straight win over the Ichabods.
The two teams were fairly even through the first ten minutes before the Ichabods went on a 9-0 run to take a 25-15 lead with 5:46 left in the half. The Lady Hornets cut the lead to 27-23 with 3:36 remaining. Washburn ended the half on an 8-0 run to take a 35-23 lead into the break.
Washburn pushed the lead to a game high 17 points with 9:42 left on a pair of Casyn Buchman free throws. Three pointers by Laura Patrick and Kelly Moten around a Patrick free throw pulled the Lady Hornets back within ten points with 8:48 left.
Emporia State trailed by eight with 4:44 remaining when they started their comeback. Merissa Quick scored in the paint and Haley Parker drove for a lay-up to cut the lead to 61-57 with 3:25 left. Patrick then hit back to back three pointers to give the Lady Hornets a 63-61 lead with 1:42 remaining. Brittney Lynch scored inside for Washburn with 1:20 left to tie it at 63. Kionna Kellogg gave the Lady Hornets the lead on two free throws after she was fouled on an offensive rebounds with 59.2 seconds left. Haley Parker made it a two possession game with a pair of free throws at the 19.6 second mark and Kellogg iced it with two more free throws with 12.0 seconds left.
Quick had a game high 16 points for the Lady Hornets. Kellogg added 13 points and 13 rebounds while Patrick also scored 13 points.
The Lady Hornets are back in action on February 8 against #25 Fort Hays State. Tip-off from Slaymaker Court in White Auditorium is set for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
