MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men’s golf team will continue its fall slate in the 2013 St. Mary’s Invitational, Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 23-24, at the par-72, 7,104-yard Bayonet and Blackhorse Golf Course in Seaside, Calif. The trip west will be the first of four events this season in California for the Wildcats.
"This will be our second year to play at this event on one of the best 36-hole layouts in California,” said head coach Tim Norris. “The Blackhorse plays a bit shorter with more doglegs while the longer Bayonet plays more straight forward. The Bayonet has hosted several national events, including PGA Tour Qualifying, Web.com events and the National Club Pro Championship.”
In addition to the Wildcats, the field for this year’s event will include Akron, Ball State, Cal, Cal State Northridge, Florida Gulf Coast, Fresno State, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, North Carolina State, Oregon, St. John’s, St. Mary’s, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Clara, UC Irvine and UC Riverside.
“This will be one of the strongest fields in the fall on a very good set of courses,” Norris continued. “Pairings for Monday have been set and we will be with the preseason No. 1 team in the country, the California Golden Bears. I know our players are looking forward to the challenge."
The K-State scoring lineup will consist of junior Kyle Weldon and seniors Daniel Wood, Alex Carney, David Klaudt and Tyler Norris.
Playing in his homestate, Weldon opened his junior campaign by tying for ninth place in last week’s Regional Preview in Columbia, Mo. Weldon fired a 1-under 215, including a second-round 2-under 69, to card the second top-10 finish of his career.
Wood will look to bounce back from a rough first outing as he tied for 42nd place in Columbia after turning in an 11-over 227. Playing in the third spot of the scoring lineup in the Regional Preview, Carney tied for 38th place after recording a 9-over 225.
Like Wood, Klaudt also tied for 42nd place at 11-over 227 in the Columbia Regional Preview. Klaudt’s seven-stroke improvement from the first round to the second round was the biggest improvement of any Wildcat golfer in the event.
Playing as an individual, Norris was the model of consistency for K-State, carding a 2-over 74 in all three rounds of the Regional Preview. As a result, Norris tied for 22nd place at 6-over 222.
