MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the second time this season senior high jumper Erik Kynard has been recognized as the Big 12 Conference Athlete of the Week for track and field after he posted the best jump in the NCAA so far this season.
Kynard cleared 2.33 meters (7-07.75) to win the KSU Open and tie his own school record. It also tied the Ahearn Field House facility record held by former Wildcat Nathan Leeper from 2001 when he was jumping for Nike.
The jump moves Kynard atop the NCAA performance list for the season ahead of Indiana’s Derek Drouin, who jumped 2.32 meters the previous week.
This is Kynard’s fourth Big 12 Athlete of the Week award in his career combining indoor and outdoor seasons and his second this season.
Kynard and the Wildcats will be in action this weekend as they chase a conference title at the Big 12 Conference Championship in Ames, Iowa. Action is scheduled to start Friday morning from the Leid Recreational Center. Men’s high jump is scheduled for noon on Saturday.
