Volleyball Drops First Match at World University Games

KAZAN, Russia – In its first match playing for Team USA at the World University Games, the Kansas State volleyball team fell in straight sets to Poland. Women’s pool play began Monday from Kazan with the Wildcats wearing the Red, White and Blue for the first time in competition.

The team fell to Poland 17-25, 14-25, 20-25 with Kaitlynn Pelger leading the USA with nine kills on 27 attacks. Senior Courtney Traxson was next on the team with six kills. Leading the defensive effort was senior libero Tristan McCarty with 12 digs.

Traxson and Chelsea Keating each performed well at the service line in their first extensive action there due to the limited substitutions under international rules. Each tallied two service aces to represent four of the team’s total of five.

After the match, head coach Suzie Fritz said she was happy to see how her team competed against some elite talent and embraced the chance to play for the United States.

“I was proud of the team in how they responded to adversity in their first match together. That is what we asked of them, to stay together, stay positive and fight to get better as we go,” Fritz said. “Our pool is one of, if not the most difficult in the tournament, but it is a tremendous opportunity to test ourselves against some of the best young players in Europe from their respective countries."

The next volleyball match for USA is against Czech Republic on Tuesday. The match is set for 11 a.m. Central and can be seen online at livefisu.tv.
