AMES, Iowa - Kansas State received a combined school record 58 points from its senior duo of Brittany Chambers and Mariah White on Saturday, but it was enough to upset No. 25/24 Iowa State as the Cyclones downed the Wildcats, 87-68.
K-State (12-11, 3-8 Big 12) was led by Brittany Chambers with a season-high 34 points, which included a career-high 13-of-17 from the line, 12 rebounds and four assists. The effort was her third straight double-double and the 13th of her career. This was her third career 30-point game and the 42nd in school history.
With her assist effort on Saturday, Chambers became the third player in school history to rank among the top-10 in career scoring, rebounding and assists. She has reached double figures in 96 career games, including 22 this season. Chambers has now scored 20 or more points in a game 29 times in her career, including 11 this season.
Joining Chambers in double digits was Mariah White with a career-high 25 points and six rebounds. White has now reached double figures in scoring in three straight games and five of the last six.
Chambers and White became the first K-State duo to combine for at least 50 points in a game since Jalana Childs and Chambers tallied 54 together at Nebraska on Feb. 19, 2011, and the 19th since the 1986-87 season. The previous record of 57 points was set by Diana Miller and Nadira Hazim on Jan. 20, 1990 at Oklahoma.
Iowa State (16-5, 7-4) saw three players reach double digits and was paced by senior forward Chelsea Poppens with 22 points and 18 rebounds for her fifth double-double this season. The Cyclones leading scorer was Hallie Christofferson with 25 points while adding seven rebounds and four assists. Iowa State shared the ball to a tune of 29 assists, led by Nikki Moody's 13.
With the help of a 15-4 run early in the first half, Iowa State jumped out to a 23-8 lead with 11:53 to play. K-State cut the gap to nine, 23-14, with 10:49 to play on consecutive three-pointers from White and Chambers.
The Cyclones would rebuild its lead to 24 points by continuing to pound the ball inside, as Iowa State shot .613 from the field in the opening half on its way to a 51-29 halftime advantage. The 51 points were the most in a half by a K-State opponent this season. The Cyclones registered 24 of their 51 points in the paint.
Using an aggressive effort from Chambers and White in the second half, K-State was able to cut the Cyclones lead to 17, 63-46, with 12:35 to play. Iowa State used a 10-5 run to rebuild its lead to 22, 73-51, with 7:48 remaining in the game.
K-State returns to Bramlage Coliseum on Wednesday, Feb. 13 to host Texas at 7 p.m. Wednesday night's game is part of a "Wildcat Weekday 4 Pack."
