MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State University held its spring commencement exercises on Saturday and among those receiving degrees were 56 current or former Wildcat student-athletes.

Highlighting the 56 graduates on the weekend were 14 members of the K-State football team , 12 men’s and women’s track and field athletes, six members of the men’s and women’s golf teams, five each from the rowing, equestrian and baseball teams, four from men’s basketball, two each from volleyball and women’s basketball and one women’s tennis player.

"It has been a memorable year for all 450-plus of our student-athletes with the overall success they have achieved and these 56 student-athletes now have undergraduate degrees to add to their accomplishments,” said Jill Shields, Senior Associate AD/Student Services. “Providing a world-class student-athlete experience is one of our top priorities as a department, and each of these individuals has displayed a tremendous amount of commitment and determination during their time at K-State. We are certainly proud to now call them K-State graduates."

K-State, which has led the Big 12 Conference in overall graduation rate in four of the past six seasons, has had another outstanding academic year in 2012-13. A total of 95 student-athletes have earned Academic All-Big 12 honors this season, while senior women’s basketball player Brittany Chambers and junior women’s tennis player Petra Niedermayerova have both been named Big 12 Scholar Athlete of the Year in their respective sports. Also, half of all Wildcat student-athletes achieved a 3.0 or higher GPA this past fall.

Following last night’s dramatic walk-off win in baseball, K-State became just the second Big 12 school and fourth BCS program since the BCS era began in 1998 to win league championships in football, men’s basketball and baseball in the same academic year, joining Stanford (1999-2000), Texas (2005-06) and Louisville (2012-13). Also, the Wildcats’ current overall winning percentage of .691 (116-52) among their five ticketed sports (baseball, football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball) is the highest in school history.
