February 26,2014-In a top 25 battle the #5 Lady Hornets fell 81-75 in overtime at #23 Pittsburg State on Wednesday night.
The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 13-2 lead to open the game with 11 points coming from Laura Patrick. The Gorillas closed within three at 10:20 left at 21-18 on Alexa Bordewick's lay-up. Emporia State would hold Pitt State to just one field goal the rest of the half. The Gorillas hit eight of ten free throws to stay in the game as the Lady Hornets took a 40-28 lead to locker room.
Emporia State went up 18 on Kionna Kellogg's three pointer with 16:30 left. Pitt State answered with an 11-2 run to cut the lead below double digits.The Lady Hornets led 71-62 with 2:51 left on Desiree Wylie's put back. The Gorillas closed the game on a 9-0 run, tying the score on a pair of Cathy Brugman free throws with 3.3 seconds left.
The Lady Hornets led 75-73 with 2:12 left in the overtime before Brugman's old fashioned three-point play gave the Gorillas the lead. Pitt State would score the final six points of the game from the free throw line to hand Emporia State just their third loss of the season.
Patrick led the Lady Hornets with 20 points while Merissa Quick and Kellogg each scored 12 points.Quick led Emporia State with eight rebounds.
Emporia State can still get a share of the MIAA regular season championship with a Central Missouri loss to Northwest Missouri on Saturday in Maryville, Mo.
Patrick made four three-pointers to tie Nicole Patry for sixth on the Lady Hornet career list with 157.
Quick's 12 points moved her past Stacy Humphrey into 24th on the Lady Hornet career scoring list with 1,046 points.
February 26, 2014-Emporia State went 12 of 21 from the free throw line in the second half in an 84-76 loss at Pittsburg State on Wednesday night in Pittsburg, Kan.
The Hornets jumped out to a 9-3 lead and had a 36-25 margin with 2:04 left in the half on a Kaleb Wright jumper. The Gorillas ended the half on a 9-2 run to pull within four at the break.
Emporia State scored the first three points of the second half to take a 41-34 lead with 19:26 left. A paul Bunch tip in gave the Hornets a 49-45 lead with 14:51 remaining when Pitt State went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good. The Gorillas had a 67-61 lead with 5:59 remaining when the Hornets went on a 5-0 run to pull within a point when Terrence Moore hit a layup and was fouled. He missed the free throw that would have tied the game with 4:58 left the Gorillas answered with a 9-1 run to take control of the game.
Pitt State hit ten of 12 free throws in the final five minutes of action while Emporia State went two for seven from the line in th same time.
Kaleb Wright led Emporia State with 23 points and Terrence Moore added 22 points. Paul Bunch had a game high 11 rebounds with six points and two blocked shots.
The Hornets will host a first round MIAA Tournament game on Tuesday night on Slaymaker Court at White Auditorium. The opponent is yet to be determined but tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
