Hornets Blow Second Half Lead In Alaska

November 21, 2013-In a game that saw ten ties and 14 lead changes, the Emporia State men couldn't come up with the final score in a 72-70 loss to Fresno Pacific in the first game of the GCI Alaska Invitational.

Paul Bunch made his presence felt early for the Hornets with five blocks in the first 9:33 of a tightly contested game. Neither team took more than a three point lead until Emporia State went on a 10-0 run. The would go to the lockerroom with the Hornets leading 40-32.

Emporia State held the lead for much of the second half until the Sunbirds tied the score at 62 with 6:56 left in the game. Fresno Pacific took their first lead of the second half at 71-69 with 2:59 left on a layup by Jackson Carbajal. Bunch hit one of two free throws to pull the Hornets within one wth 2:33 left but that would be the last score for Emporia State. Carbajal hit one of two free thows with 15.5 seconds left to give the Sunbirds a 72-70 lead and the Hornets couldn't get a shot off as they fell for the first time this season.

Kaleb Wright led Emporia State with a career high 27 points and was joined in double figures by Terrence Moore with 16 points. Gavin Brown had seven rebounds to lead the Hornets, who were outrebounded as a team 38-34 on the night. Bunch had an Alaska Invitational single game and tournament record six blocked shots, all in the first half.

The Hornets will be back in action on Friday night when they take on the host Alaska Nanooks. Tip-off is set for 10:00 p.m. (CT) from Fairbanks, Alaska.
