MAYETTA, Ks. The Firekeeper Golf Course had some special Symetra Tour, Road To The LPGA Tour, guests Monday.
Mayetta, Kansas is the host of the inaugural Symetra LPGA Tour event, put on by the Prairie Band Casino and Resort. Golfers on the Symetra Tour battle it out every week to earn a spot on the LPGA Tour.
Blair O'Neal, professional golfer said, "Every week, week in week out we're in a different state, different city. So it's a grind out here, a lot of travel. Every week you're getting used to a new golf course."
Blair O'Neal and Calle Nielson came out a little early to check out the Firekeeper Golf Course. But they said Symetra Golf Tournaments are more than just about the golfers.
Calle Nielson, professional golfer said, "It's just amazing how much communities take us in and want us to be there. Being wanted in a community is pretty cool. You don't want to go somewhere and they stick their nose out at you."
The tour covers 20 cities, 12 states, and two tournaments in Kansas. The other tournament in Kansas is in Garden City. This one tournament here in Northeast Kansas can turn into many more.
Assistant General Manager at Prairie Band Casino and Resort Stephen Ortiz said, "This is our first test run on bringing these events to Northeast Kansas. We really look forward to the future to see what we can bring to the table next year and hopefully it keeps getting bigger and better from here."
Although it is a tournament for the players. Money is also raised for charity. According to the Symetra Tour, it "has given over 5 million dollars to charitable organizations throughout the nation since 1989." And this tournament will help contribute to that total.
Ortiz said, Part of the tournament has a charity sponsorship so the Prairie Band Potawatomi Boys and Girls Club and the folds of honor Foundation are going to be the beneficiaries of the events we put forth through this."
