(CBS) -- Kansas guard Wayne Selden will return for his sophomore season of college basketball.

"Cant wait to get to work," Selden said, "and get back in the fieldhouse."

A former McDonald's All-American, Selden averaged 9.7 points and 2.5 assists this season while helping the Jayhawks win their 10th consecutive Big 12 title. The 6-foot-5 guard was considered as a borderline first-round pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, if he would've made himself available. His announcement now puts the spotlight squarely on teammate Joel Embiid, a 7-foot center who told CBSSports.com on Sunday that he remains undecided.

Embiid is a projected top-five pick.

He missed KU's final six games with a back injury.

Bill Self released a statement on Tuesday afternoon addressing the situation:

Wayne contacted me this morning (Tuesday) and said he was getting annoyed with all the speculation on whether or not he was going to return to school next year or not. He said, ‘what do I do?’, and I said if you feel comfortable with everything, tweet it out. I told him to make sure you are sure. Of course, he is sure. Wayne had a terrific freshman year and he is just going to continue to get better. He’s excited about the opportunity for himself to get better and also for our team to improve and be stronger next year. He’s excited about the role he will have. We’re all happy here but this came as no surprise to us.
