COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Kansas State men's golf team battled rainy conditions on Tuesday to finish in eighth place in the 2013 Columbia Regional Preview at the par-72, 7,221-yard Club at Old Hawthorne. The Wildcats finished at 24-over 888 as a team and were led by junior Kyle Weldon, who tied for ninth place after firing a 1-under 215.
“We were going along pretty well but we just gave away some shots on the last four or five holes,” said head coach Tim Norris. “We played some of the more difficult holes to finish in some rain and we just did not handle it very well. I thought some of our guys knew we were playing well with a chance to move up the leaderboard, and the pressure got to them a little bit and there is nothing wrong with that.
“We played awfully well to finish in eighth place but there were just too many shots at the end,” Norris continued. “That is not mechanical issue as much as it is a mental issue, and we are just going to have to get over that to be a better team.”
After recording a 4-under 140 during the first two rounds of play on Monday, Weldon turned in a third-round 3-over 75 to capture the second top-10 finish of his career. Playing as an individual, senior Tyler Norris tallied a 6-over 222 to finish in a six-way tie for 22nd place. Norris’ third-round 2-over 74 was the lowest score of the day for the Wildcats.
Senior Alex Carney finished the event tied for 38th place after turning in a 9-over 225. Fellow seniors David Klaudt and Daniel Wood finished in a tie for 42nd place at 11-over 227. Freshman Seth Smith rounded out the Wildcat scoring lineup as he placed 59th in his first collegiate event.
Playing on its home course, Missouri recorded a 12-under 852 to take home the team title. Tiger golfer Emilio Cuartero finished atop the individual leaderboard as he carded an 11-under 205, besting second-place finisher Michael Garrettson of South Alabama by five strokes.
The Wildcats will continue their fall slate next Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 23-24, at the St. Mary’s Invitational in Monterey, Calif. Results and recaps from the event can be found at kstatesports.com at the conclusion of each day’s competition.
