COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Kansas State men’s golf team made a 13-stroke improvement from round one to round two on Monday to sit in fifth place in the 2013 Columbia Regional Preview at the par-72, 7,221-yard Club at Old Hawthorne.

After carding a 9-over par 297 during the first round, the Wildcats were able to bounce back to record a second-round score of 4-under par 284. The 13-shot improvement during the afternoon round was the second-largest among the 11-team field.

“This morning was not going great but then Alex (Carney) birdied three holes in a row at the end of his round, and then Kyle (Weldon) made a couple of birdies, and that got us out of the cellar,” head coach Tim Norris said. “I was proud of our guys, and I hope we can keep this momentum going into tomorrow.”

Weldon is currently in third place as he turned in a 4-under par 140 on Monday – including a second-round score of 3-under par 69 – to lead the Wildcats. Carney joins Weldon in the top 15 entering the final round as he is tied for 15th place after he fired a pair of even-par 72s.

After carding a 4-over par 76 in the first round, senior David Klaudt was able to recover with a second-round score of 3-under par 69. Heading into Tuesday’s final round, Klaudt is tied for 20th. Playing as an individual, Tyler Norris shot 2-over par 74 in both rounds to sit in a tie for 29th.

Rounding out the K-State scoring lineup is senior Daniel Wood and freshman Seth Smith, who are tied for 47th and tied for 59th, respectively. Wood tallied a 10-over par 152 Monday while Smith notched a 15-over par 157.

Host school Missouri sits atop the team leaderboard at 14-under par 562. The Tigers were paced by individual leader Emilio Cuartero, who fired a 9-under par 135, and Euan Walker, who is in second place at 5-under par 139.
