MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State junior Kyle Weldon recorded his second-straight Metropolitan Amateur Championship title this weekend at the Persimmon Woods Golf Club in suburban St. Louis, Mo. With the win, Weldon became just the second golfer in Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association history to earn back-to-back victories.
“When you consider only one other player has won it back-to-back and you look at the players who have won this, and some of the players who have not, it is a pretty special accomplishment,” Weldon told the St. Louis Dispatch.
With his father, Keith, serving as his caddy, Weldon began the event with an impressive first-round 5-under 65, but battled high winds during Friday’s second round to record a 3-over 73 to enter the final round with a two-stroke lead. With the help of three final-round birdies, Weldon was able to hold off a late charge by Phil Caravia to finish atop the final leaderboard at even-par 208.
Weldon and the rest of the Wildcat men’s golf team will open the 2013-14 season on September 16-17 in the Columbia Regional Preview at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo.
