Ichabods go cold in final five minutes and drop game at No. 8 Central Missouri
WARRENSURG, Mo. – The Ichabods got within six points at the five minute mark Monday at eighth-ranked Central Missouri but didn't score again until the final seconds in a 68-57 loss at the UCM Multipurpose Building. Washburn fell to 7-5 and 3-3 in the MIAA and will now return home to start a four-game home stand Thursday at 7 p.m. against Oklahoma Christian. It will be the final non-conference game of the regular season. Taylor Ignoto led Washburn for the second straight game with 18 points off the bench. Kara Lee added 15 points and Brittney Lynch had 10. Lee and Lynch each had a team-high seven rebounds. The Jennies (11-1, 5-0 MIAA) led by double figures the entire second half until Washburn went on an 8-0 run to get within six points, 55-49 at the 9:09 mark. The Ichabods got within six four more times after that, the final at 5:09 on a layup from Lee, but didn't score again until Casyn Buchman hit a jumper with 12 seconds left that cut the lead down to its ultimate mark of 11. Washburn missed eight straight shots after Lee's layup. Washburn started the game shooting 50 percent in the first half but shot just 29 percent (9 of 30) in the second half. The Jennies didn't shoot much better at 30 percent and both teams scored 26 points in the final half. The Ichabods hit just 2 of 15 3-pointers all night after a 0 of 8 performance in the second half. The Jennies hit just 5 of 24 3-pointers the whole game but got big performances from Keuna Flax and Shelby Winkelmann. Flax had 23 points and 10 rebounds and Winkelmann added 18 points. The first six and a half minutes of the game saw seven ties and two lead changes. The last tie came at 15-15 after a basket from Honor Duvall. Central Missouri answered with an 8-0 run after that and held the lead the rest of the way. Five straight points from Ignoto late in the first half got Washburn back within five points but the Jennies scored nine of the final 12 points in the half after that to hold a 42-31 lead at halftime. Four straight points from Flax gave the Jennies a 16-point lead with 15:42 remaining, their highest lead of the game.
WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- A slow start coupled with cold second half shooting was too much for the Ichabods to overcome in a 77-63 loss at Central Missouri.
The Ichabods (11-2, 4-2 MIAA) trailed 42-31 at the break after falling down 8-0 to start the game. The Mules (12-2, 4-1 MIAA) shot 16 of 30 in the first half taking advantage of seven Ichabod turnovers leading to nine points. Kyle Wiggins scored 10 in the first half while North added seven.
The Ichabods went nearly six minutes between the first and second halves without a score as the Mules would lead by as many as 18 in the second half.
Washburn cut the lead down to 11 at 74-63 with 2:06 left but would get no closer the rest of the way.
North led the Ichabods with a game-high 16 points while pulling down seven rebounds. Wiggins 10 points.
The Ichabods finished 37 percent from the field after going 9 of 29 in the second half going 1 of 9 from behind the 3-point line hitting 3 of 14 for the game.
Washburn was outrebounded 40-37. The Mules also had 16 offensive rebounds turning it into 18 second chance points.
The Ichabods will be back in action on Saturday when they will take on Northwest Missouri on Saturday in Lee Arena at 7 p.m. beginning a four-game homestand.
