Washburn Rural players bite their first place trophy after beating Blue Valley in the 6A state championship game.
Topeka (WIBW) --- Washburn Rural won it's 7th State Volleyball championship in 9 years Saturday afternoon at the Kansas Expocentre. The Lady Blues swept Blue Valley Stillwell in 2 straight sets.
Blue Valley led early in both sets, but Rural was able to come back and win each set 25-19. Washburn Rural coach Kevin Bordewick said that his team gained valuable experience against the Tigers, playing them in Fayettville a couple of weeks ago. "We serve received really well, and when we do that, I think we can hit with about anybody" Bordewick said after the win.
In Class 5A, Shawnee Heights was no match for St. James Academy, who moved up a class this year after winning 4 straight titles in class 4A. The Thunder beat the Thunderbirds 25-19, 25-6.
Hayden fell to McPherson in a tightly contested match in the finals of class 4A in Salina. The Bullpups knocked off the Wildcats 22-25, 25-22, 25-23.
Hillsboro defeated Southeast of Saline in class 3A at the Bicentennial Center.
Washington County knocked off Ell-Saline in straight sets in class 2A in Emporia.
Olpe was the 1A DI champion after defeating St. John-Hudson 32-30, 20-25, 25-22 at Fort Hays State. Baileyville B&B defeated Argonia in the DII title tile 25-18, 24-26, 25-18.
