Washburn Lady Blues Sweep Lindenwood In Softball Action

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Lady Blues softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep over the Lindenwood Lions winning 6-1 and taking the nightcap 10-3. Washburn will wrap up the season with a single game against Truman at noon on Sunday.

After the Lions jumped on the board in the first inning with a home run, Washburn (13-32, 9-18 MIAA) came back and tied the score in the bottom of the frame on a solo home run by Alex Zordel, her seventh of the season and 29th of her career. The Lady Blues came back with another solo run in the bottom of the second when Leah Garland connected on her fourth home run of the season. Washburn broke it open in the bottom of the third inning when Garland hit her second home run of the game which cleared the bases with a grand slam to left field putting Washburn up 6-1 wrapping up the scoring for both teams. Lauren Thimmesch picked up the win striking out seven while scattering five Lion hits. Garland finished with a career-high 5 RBI in the game going 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored.

Washburn jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second game of the twinbill as Shelby Erickson connected on a 3-run blast down the left field line scoring Zordel, who walked in the inning and Thimmesch who doubled to left center. The Lions (19-29, 10-16 MIAA) cut the lead to 3-2 when Alyssa Esperum singled to center driving in two runs. Washburn added one in the third on Erickson's second home run of the game and her seventh of the season. In the fourth, Washburn picked up four more runs to go up 8-2. Lauren Byrn drove in a run and then Zordel added an RBI with a single to center. Thimmesch drew a bases loaded walk and then Erickson picked up another RBI with a sac fly to left. The Lions added a solo run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 8-3. Neither team would score until Thimmesch connected on her team-high 12th home run of the season scoring Zordel stretching the lead to 10-3. Washburn held the Lions scoreless in the bottom of the seventh picking up the sweep. Zordel picked up the win in the circle striking out three improving to 2-0 allowing nine hits. Zordel, Thimmesch, Erickson and Marina Quimby all had two hits. Erickson had a career-high 5 RBI and Thimmesch finished with 3 RBI.

Zordel finished 4 for 5 in the doubleheader driving in two and scoring three runs. Erickson and Garland each drove in five overall and both scored three runs as well.
