WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team split an MAIA doubleheader with Central Missouri taking the opener 6-3 before dropping the nightcap 13-5 in five innings. Washburn will return to action on Saturday at Southwest Baptist.
In the opener, Washburn (6-14, 2-4 MIAA) fell behind 1-0 after the Jennies' first at bat, but a grand slam by Haylee Marsteller cleared the bases and put Washburn up 4-1. It was Marsteller's first collegiate home run. The Jennies added one in the third inning, but the Lady Blues came back with two in the sixth on a two-out, two RBI single by Katie Schroeder staking Washburn to a 6-2 lead. The Jennies would add a solo run in the bottom of the sixth as the Lady Blues took the 6-3 win. Seven different Lady Blues had a hit in the game. Lauren Thimmesch picked up the complete game win improving to 5-6 on the season allowing one earned run scattering seven hits.
In the second game Central (14-8, 4-2 MIAA) again scored in its first at bat with a solo run and the Lady Blues took the lead in their next at bat scoring four runs in the top of the second as Shelby Erickson led off the inning with a home run. After a double by Deidra Jones and a pair of walks, Schroeder cleared the bases with a three RBI double stretching the lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the second, the flood gates opened for the Jennies as they scored seven times with five of those coming as uneared runs as two Washburn errors helped the cause for the Jennies. Central added two more in the bottom of the third on another pair of unearned runs. Washburn scored one in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Jones but the Jennies scored three more in the bottom of the fifth taking the 13-5 win. Marina Quimby took the loss as the Jennies took advantage of four Washburn errors which led to seven unearned runs.
