NORMAN, Okla. -- The Washburn Ichabods put up a great effort falling to their second Big 12 opponent dropping an 83-66 decision at Oklahoma. Washburn will wrap up its Big 12 exhibition schedule at Kansas on Monday night in Allen Fieldhouse.
Will McNeill led the Ichabods scoring a game-high 19 points going 12 of 12 from the free throw line. He led three Washburn players in double figures as Christian Ulsaker and Joe Smith each scored 12 points off the bench.
The Ichabods were down early 6-0 after a pair of 3's by the Sooners, but the Ichabods came back back to tie the score at 10-10 with 12:48 to play in the first half. The Sooners would lead by 11 a couple of different times, but Washburn rallied to cut the lead back to as few as six in the first half at 32-26 after a 3-point play by Ulsaker, but the Sooners went on to take a 40-28 halftime lead after back to back 3-pointers.
In the second half, the Ichabods trimmed the Sooner lead back to six after a pair of McNeill free throws with 16:02 remaining in the game and keep the Ichabods from getting within double digits and they would eventually build a lead of 21 at 72-53 with 5:43 to play. Washburn again would go on a run to cut the lead back to 15 but would get no closer as the Sooners picked up the 17-point win.
The Sooners finished the game 11 of 22 from 3-point range while going 25 of 57 overall from the field. OU was also 22 of 32 from the free throw line in the game.
Washburn finished 23 of 56 from the field and 2 of 8 from 3-point range hitting 18 of 24 free throw attempts.
The Sooners held a slight 40 to 36 advantage on the glass including 14 offensive rebounds compared to 13 for the Ichabods.
The Ichabods had 23 turnovers leading to 20 points for the Sooners while Washburn had 12 second chance points compared to nine for Oklahoma.
Bobby Chipman had eight rebounds to lead the Ichabods while Smith added six with his 12 points.
