KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods, who were ranked No. 4 in the NABC top 25 coaches poll, were picked as the top team entering the 2012-13 season. Washburn shared the MIAA title and won the conference tournament last season en route to a 25-8 season. Washburn will open the exhibition season at Kansas State on Oct. 30.

Washburn reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament and returns 90 percent of its scoring and 94 percent of its rebounding, so expectations will be high entering the season. The Ichabods return nine players who saw action last season headlined by All-American and first team all-MIAA selection Will McNeill. Washburn also has a pair of senior honorable mention all-MIAA picks in Martin Mitchell and Bobby Chipman. Joined by two other seniors in Zack Riggins and Joseph Smith, the Ichabods are an experienced group who look to exceed last season's run to the MIAA title.

Washburn received 11 of the 15 first-place coaches votes totalling 188 points ahead of Central Missouri who had three first-place votes and 180 points followed by Northwest Missouri in third with 170 points and one first-place vote. Fort Hays State and Pittsburg State tied for fourth with 137 points while Missouri Southern was in sixth with 131 points. MIAA newcomers Central Oklahoma and Lindenwood were seventh and eighth while Southwest Baptist was ninth with 89 points.
