Washburn Falls In MIAA Opener To UCO

Kansas City, Mo. -- Sixth seeded Central Oklahoma used a strong second half to pick up a 99-88 victory over third seed Washburn in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Central Oklahoma shot .490 from the field as they picked up the first multiple seed upset of the MIAA Tournament.

The Ichabods trailed by as much as 11 points at times during the first half, but went into the break tied scoring the final nine points of the half. The two teams combined to hit 22 three-pointers in a game that also saw 53 free throws. UCO hit 25 of their 32 free throws in the second half down the stretch to close out the victory.

Spencer Smith led the way for the Bronchos with a double-double scoring 27 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Jamell Cormier hit 12 free throws as he finished with 20 points on the night. Josh Gibbs had a strong night scoring 19 points and pulled down six rebounds. Christian Huffman finished in double figures with 13 points while June Carter added 12 points. For the Ichabods Will McNeill scored more than 30 points for the second straight game scoring 34 points and pulling down seven rebounds. Kyle Wiggins also finished in double figures adding 15 points and Bobby Chipman pulled down eight rebounds. Martin Mitchell was the final WU player in double digits scoring 11 points on the evening.

Central Oklahoma advances to face second seeded Central Missouri at 2:15 p.m. on March 9 from Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.


Kansas City, Mo. -- Second seeded Central Missouri hit some big shots down the stretch as the defeated Pittsburg State 69-63 in the MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament quarterfinal. The Mules shot .412 in the second half as they expanded on a one-point halftime lead to escape with the victory.

UCM added 24 points off of turnover and got 22 points from their bench as they overcame 14 second chance points from Pittsburg State. As the second half began UCM would run out to as much as a ten point lead before PSU cut the lead to just two points with 15 seconds to play.

Matt Webb led the way for the Mules scoring 15 points and hauling down eight rebounds. Widgett Washtingon added 12 points to a team best five assists on the evening. Alex Dean also added 12 points while Charles Hammork finished with 11 points. For the Gorillas JaVon McGee led the way with a double-double scoring 22 points and pulled down a game high 11 rebounds. A.J. Adams, Jake Bullard and Kaleb Porter each added 11 points in the game for PSU.


Kansas City, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri shot .523 from the field but needed two late free throws to seal a 69-65 victory over Northeastern State in the MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament quarterfinals. The Bearcats shot .714 in the first half, but lead only 39-36 as the two teams went to the break.

The game was a back-and-fourth slugfest for much of the first half with no team leading by more than five points and seven ties between the two squads. As the second half began NWMSU sprinted out to as much as a 14 points advantage before NSU began to chip away at the lead. With 3:04 to play the game would see it's 11th tie, but NWMSU would scored the final four points of the contest to escape with the win.

For the Bearcats Dillon Starzl led the way with 25 points going 9-of-12 from the field and hitting seven-of-ten free throws including the games final two. DeAngelo Hailey scored 12 points including hitting a three against the buzzer at halftime to give the Bearcats the three-point lead. Grant Cozad added 12 points and six rebounds to the effort while Matt Wallace pulled down a team best seven rebounds. For the RiverHawks Bryton Hobbs led the way scoring 23 points and a team best three assists. Ethan Anderson scored 15 points while Landon DeMasters scored 13 points and Jermaine Bransford finished with 10 points.

Northwest Missouri will face top seeded Fort Hays State on March 9 at 12 p.m. from Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.


Kansas City, Mo. -- Fort Hays State used strong shooting to defeat Missouri Southern in the first of four quarterfinal games. The Tigers shot .438 for the game as the advanced to Saturday's semi-final round.

Missouri Southern jumped out early leading by as much as five points within the first five minutes. Marquis Addison started off scoring nine of the Lions first 11 points as they jumped to an 11-6 advantage. Ben Congiusta would go four of four from the three-point line to help Fort hays State claw back into it hitting four three-pointers in the first half to help FHSU to a 36-31 halftime advantage.

The Tigers would then use .455 shooting in the second half to push their lead to 19 points and close out the victory. For the Tigers Congiusta finished with 17 points on the afternoon. Craig Nicholson added 19 points and dished out seven assists. Carson Konrade finished with 15 points while Lance Russell added 12 points. For the Lions Marquis Addison led the way with 13 points and six rebounds. Jordan Talbert added 11 points and eight rebounds and was joined by Stephen Atkinson with eight boards. RJ Leverette had 10 points and dished out five assists.

Fort Hays State will advance to face the winner of Northeastern State/Northwest Missouri at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 from Municipal Auditorium.
