BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The seventh-ranked Ichabods swept California (Pa.) Saturday morning and then beat host Ferris State 3-1 in the afternoon as they improved to 4-0 for the 12th straight year, all under head coach Chris Herron.
Washburn beat the Vulcans 25-17, 25-15, 25-20 and then beat FSU 22-25, 25-15, 25-21, 26-24 to finish action in the Bulldog Invitational. The Ichaods will return to action next Friday and Saturday in the Colorado Mines Oredigger Volleyball Classic with four matches.
The Ferris State match was Washburn's toughest of the weekend. The Bulldogs trailed 22-20 in the opening set then scored five straight points to win 25-22. Washburn then won easily in the second set and held of Ferris State in the third set to go up 2-1. The Ichabods scored 10 of 12 points at one point in the fourth set to build a 17-12 lead but then gave up 12 of the next 15 points to fall behind 24-21. The Bulldogs got to set point by scoring five straight points.
Washburn then answered with five straight of its own to clinch the match. Leanna Willer had two straight kills and then one from Sarah Vicory tied it at 24-24. Two straight Ferris State errors won it for Washburn.
Vicory had 15 kills and hit .448 with two errors in 29 attempts. Willer added 14 kills and Marissa Cox had a team-high 16 with a .314 attack percentage. Willer had 13 digs for a double-double. Abby Wittman also had a double-double with 40 assists and 23 digs while Kelsey Lewis added 23 digs at libero.
Washburn hit .195 as a team while the Bulldogs had a .167 percentage.The Bulldogs had nine blocks while Washburn had four.
The Cal match had 20 ties and 12 lead changes but Washburn managed to win each set by at least five.
Cox led again with 10 kills and hit .421 while Hannah Frierdich added eight kills and three blocks. Wittman had 26 assists and 10 digs.
