TOPEKA, Ks. (Feb.12, 2013) -- Heartland Park Topeka is pleased to announce a major addition to its 2013 schedule, with the international Tough Mudder series making an appearance Sept. 21st and 22nd. It will be the series' first appearance in the Topeka area.
Tough Mudder events are hardcore 10-12-mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test participants' all-around strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie. As the leading company in the booming obstacle course industry, Tough Mudder has already challenged half-a-million inspiring participants worldwide and raised more than $5 million dollars for the Wounded Warrior Project.
"Our 25th Anniversary year has started off with a bang and we're very excited about bringing Tough Mudder to Heartland Park this year," said Joe Douthitt, General Manager of Heartland Park Topeka. "Thousands of people will converge on Topeka to push themselves to the limit in an unmatched obstacle running challenge.
"What a creative, unique use of our facility. Plus, this event will have significant economic impact on the Topeka community. We look forward to this becoming an annual event.''
Tough Mudder has grown from three events in 2010 to 35 events in 2012 and from 20,000 participants in 2010 to more than 460,000 participants in 2012.
"We are so very excited to work with Heartland Park Topeka to welcome Tough Mudder to the Capital City," said Jeffrey Alderman of Visit Topeka Inc." This remarkable event will allow us to showcase our wonderful city to thousands of participants and spectators, and is a win-win for the entire community."
Seventy-six percent of past participants have been male and 24 percent female. Seventy-eight percent of past participants have finished Tough Mudder courses, which include between 25 and 30 obstacles. It takes participants an average of 3.5 hours to complete a Tough Mudder course.
"Tough Mudder is excited for its first event in the Topeka area, and Heartland Park Topeka, with its unique terrain, provides the perfect backdrop for 'Probably the Toughest Event on the Planet,' " said Matt Johnson, CMO of Tough Mudder. "We know people in the Topeka area will prove themselves to be up to the Tough Mudder challenge, and we look forward to seeing them out at Heartland Park in September."
