December 20, 2012- Six members of the 2012 MIAA Champion Emporia State softball team have been honored for their efforts in the classroom by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Jessica Brewer, Jennifer Heerey, Lauren Sharp, Tricia Vogel, Allison Wood and Taylor Zordel have been named NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes. The award is bestowed upon any player submitted by an NFCA member coach with a 3.50 grade point average or higher.
Brewer was a second-team All-MIAA outfielder as a junior last season for the Hornets and has a 3.65 GPA in Health Promotions. She hit .326 with 52 runs scored and 13 stolen bases for Emporia State. She was second in the MIAA in runs scored and fifth in stoeln bases last season.
Heerey was a four-time All-MIAA pitcher after earning honorable mention status as a senior last season for the Hornets and has a 3.75 GPA in Elementary Education. She was 11-4 with 101 strikeouts for Emporia State and ended her career with 64 wins. She was ranked sixth in the MIAA in ERA last season.
Sharp was 10-2 in the circle as a junior last season for the Hornets and has a 3.65 GPA in Physical Education. She was ranked eighth in the MIAA in wins and 11th in ERA last season for Emporia State.
Vogel was named first-team All-MIAA and All-Region at first base as a sophomore for the Hornets and has a 3.64 GPA in Mathematics. She hit .398 with nine home runs and 58 RBI for Emporia State. She was ranked second in the MIAA in RBI, fifth in batting average and eighth in home runs last season.
Wood hit .286 in limited action as a sophomore for the Hornets last season and has a 3.86 GPA in Elementary Education. She started at third base against Newman and reached base safely twice while scoring a run.
Zordel was a second-team All-MIAA pick at shortstop as a freshman for the Hornets last season and has a 3.90 GPA. She hit .343 with 33 runs scored, 33 RBI and 14 stolen bases for Emporia State. She was ranked fourth in the MIAA in stolen bases and was the 24th toughest player to strike out in the nation last season.
The Hornets were 42-11 last year and went 20-0 in the MIAA. It was the first time an MIAA school had gone through a full round robin schedule undefeated. Emporia State has advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last nine years. They will open the season on Feb. 15 at the Ark.-Monticello Hampton Inn Classic.
