MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior Kaitlynn Pelger was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 20, the conference office announced.
It is Pelger’s second weekly award this season as she was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 16. The two-time AVCA All-America Honorable Mention has garnered seven conference weekly awards in her career – including five offensive honors – the most by a player in program history.
Pelger paced the Big 12 in kills per set (5.0) and points per set (5.33) for the week. The Olathe, Kan. native had 15 kills in K-State’s only match, a sweep of Texas Tech on Oct. 19 in Ahearn Field House. Pelger recorded a .406 hitting percentage, her best clip in a Big 12 match this season.
Pelger’s 15 kills were also noteworthy from her career standpoint. The middle blocker, now with 1,408 career kills, became only the fourth player in program history with more than 1,400 career kills. She passed Yolanda Young (1,394 career kills) on the Wildcats’ all-time list.
In conference-only matches this season, Pelger is averaging 3.73 kills per set and 4.43 points per set, which are third- and second-best, respectively, in the Big 12.
This is the 39th time in program history a K-State player has earned a Big 12 Player of the Week award and 30th under head coach Suzie Fritz since 2001. In addition to Pelger’s two awards, Katie Brand was named Rookie of the Week earlier this season. The Wildcats’ three weekly awards this year are their most since 2010 when K-State also had three weekly award winners.
Other Big 12 award winners for the week include Chelsea Albers of Kansas (Defensive) and Natalie Gower of TCU (Rookie).
Pelger and the Wildcats head to Waco, Texas on Wednesday, Oct. 23 to take on Baylor at 7 pm. It is the first meeting of the season between the two programs. K-State is 14-5 (2-4 Big 12) this season while Baylor is 9-13 (1-5 Big 12).
