TOPEKA, Kan. – Head coach Ron McHenry announced Tuesday that two more transfers will attend Washburn this fall and play basketball for the Ichabods. Oklahoma center Felisha Gibbs and Northeast Community College forward Emily Gamble will bring Washburn's 2014-15 recruiting class to five newcomers.
Gibbs played in six games for the Sooners last year as a freshman forward and will be a sophomore and move to the post position this year. She scored 12 points with five rebounds. She played at Earle High School in Earle, Arkansas, and averaged 21 points and 12 rebounds as a senior to earn all-state honor.
"Felisha is an outstanding athlete with great size and length," McHenry said of the 6-2 athlete. "She can play with her back to the basket or turnaround and play just as well facing the basket. She comes from an outstanding program at OU and her experience there will assist in developing quickly here."
Gibbs became the third NCAA Division I transfer on the roster. Erika Lane played a year at Tulsa and will be a sophomore and senior Honor Duvall is in her second year at Washburn after playing at Long Island.
Gamble averaged 11.8 points and 4.5 rebounds a game as a sophomore last year as she helped the Hawks to a 26-4 record. She scored 7.8 points a game as a freshman and Northeast CC advanced to the NJCAA Division I national tournament.
"When we put Emily on the floor, she's going to have the ability to either get to the basket or the foul line," McHenry said. "She's got a great feel to score and can make plays for her teammates. She'll be a tough matchup for opposing teams."
Gamble played at Central High School in Omaha, Nebraska, and was a four-time all-state selection. She helped the Eagles to a state title as a senior.
"We are extremely excited about landing Felisha and Emily and look forward to having them in the Ichabod family for the next few years," McHenry said.
McHenry's 2013-14 recruiting class now consists of DI transfers Gibbs and Lane, junior college transfer Gamble and high school seniors Madison and Makayla Vargo, twins from Riley County High School. They make up three guards, a forward and a center.
McHenry will return 11 letterwinners from last year's 16-11 team that finished sixth in the MIAA at 11-8. All-MIAA guard Casyn Buchman will return as a senior.
Washburn will play an exhibition November 9 at Kansas and then tip off the regular season with three games at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. The home opener is November 18 against Benedictine at Schendel Court in Lee Arena and the MIAA opener is December 4 at home against Southwest Baptist.
