No. 21 Washburn Ichabods Use Balanced Attack In Win Over Pittsburg State

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 21-ranked Washburn Ichabods had four players score in double figures while holding Pittsburg State to a season-tying low in points in a 67-51 win on Schendel Court at Lee Arena. Washburn continues the home stand facing Missouri Western on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. With the win, Washburn improved to 12-4 on Groundhog Day.

The Ichabods (14-4, 7-3 MIAA) and the Gorillas started slow as only a total of 11 combined points were scored through the first media timeout at the 14:52 mark in the game. After the Gorillas (13-6, 6-5 MIAA) would go up three at 9-6 with 14:36 to go, back-to-back lay ups by Joseph Smith and Bobby Chipman put the Ichabods up 10-9. The teams traded leads and Washburn took the lead for good on a lay up by Zack Rigginskick starting a 16-3 run over the next 5:12 with an 8-0 during the stretch to provide the difference in the game as the Ichabods took a 35-21 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half it was much the same for the Ichabods as they would not let Pitt State get within 13 points the rest of the way building a lead as many as 20 taking the 16-point win.

Will McNeill led the Ichabods with 14 points going 9 of 11 from the free throw line while adding seven rebounds and four assists. Chipman finished with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds with two blocks.Martin Mitchell had 10 points and six rebounds and Smith finished with 10 points.

Kaleb Porter scored 11 points off the bench to lead the Gorillas.

Washburn held the Gorillas to 33 percent shooting on the night including a 7 of 26 performance in the first half as they finished 17 of 51 for the game. Washburn was 22 of 55 for the performance. Washburn had a 41-30 advantage on the glass with 15 offensive end leading to 16 second chance points.
