TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- The No. 10-ranked Washburn Ichabods lost their second straight game falling 85-78 to Northeastern State. Washburn will continue its three-game roadtrip at Lincoln on Thursday.
Of the RiverHawks' 22 field goals, 13 came from 3-point range as Northeastern State shot 72 percent from 3-point range. NSU was aided by 28 points from the free throw line as they finished 28 of 35 from the line in front of a near-capacity 700 fans.
The Ichabods (10-4, 3-3 MIAA) led 32-31 at the break marking the second time in a row the Ichabods lost after leading at halftime. Washburn shot 60 percent in the first from the field hitting 14 of 24 shots for a 58 percent average finishing at 53 percent for the game after hitting 27 of 51 shots overall. The RiverHawks finished 22 of 38 from the field for a 58 percent average on the day.
Coming out of the break, Bobby Chipman put the Ichabods up 34-31 but a 3-pointer by Jermaine Bransford started a 15-5 run over the next 4:38 to put the RiverHawks up 46-39 with 14:41 remaining in the game.
The Ichabods cut the lead to four at 52-48 with 10:14 to play after a pair of Will McNeill free throws but the RiverHawks would go on a 10-2 run over the net 2:56 to build a 12 -point lead at 62-50 with 7:05 to play and Washburn would not get closer than seven the rest of the way after two McNeill free throws in the closing seconds.
McNeill led the Ichabods with 23 points going 11 of 15 from the free throw line and he also led the Ichabods with six assists. Martin Mitchell scored 16 and Chipman finished with 12.
Bryton Hobbs scored 25 to lead the RiverHawks pacing four Northeastern State players in double figures.
