McGruder Earns Bid To Portsmouth Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior Rodney McGruder has received a bid to play in the prestigious Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, which is set for April 10-13 at Churchland High School in Portsmouth, Va.

Operating since 1953, the Portsmouth Invitational is one of the preeminent NBA pre-draft camps with approximately 200 NBA representatives in attendance. The four-day tournament consists of 12 games with the 64 invited college seniors playing on eight teams of eight players.

McGruder will be playing for Mike Duman Auto Sales’ squad in the tournament and will team with Kenny Boynton (Florida), Vincent Council (Providence), Robert Covington (Tennessee State), Dwayne Davis (Southern Miss), Richard Howell (N.C. State), Brock Motum (Washington State) and Aziz N’Diaye (Washington). The team will be coached by Max Gillespie and Jerry Hasty, along with NBA assistant Ruben Patterson.

McGruder will begin play in the second game of the tournament on Wednesday, April 10 at 8 p.m. CT against Portsmouth Partnership, which includes Reginald Buckner (Ole Miss), Larry Drew II (UCLA) and Colton Iverson (Colorado State). The winner of the contest will play in the first semifinal game on Friday, April 12 at 6 p.m., while the loser will play Thursday, April 11 at 2:15 p.m. against the loser of game one. McGruder is one of four Big 12 players in the Portsmouth Invitational, along with Will Clyburn (Iowa State), Elijah Johnson (Kansas) and Travis Releford (Kansas).

An honorable mention AP All-American, McGruder led Big 12 champion K-State (27-8, 14-4 Big 12) in eight categories, including scoring (15.6 ppg.), double-digit scoring games (29), 20-point games (11), field goals (204), field goals attempted (462), rebounding (5.4 rpg.), free throws attempted (117), starts (35) and minutes (33.5). He was just the third Wildcat to earn All-Big 12 First Team honors since the inception of the league, joining Michael Beasley (2008) and Jacob Pullen (2010, 2011), while he was the only men’s basketball player to earn recognition to the All-Big 12 First Team in both athletics and academics. For the season, he averaged 15.6 points on 44.2 percent shooting with 5.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 steals in 33.5 minutes per game.

Among the Top 10 of 14 career categories at K-State, McGruder joins two-time All-American Bob Boozer as the only Wildcats to rank in the Top 10 in both career scoring (1,576, seventh) and rebounding (654, seventh). McGruder is a part of the winningest senior class in school history (101), while he is one of just Wildcats to appear in four consecutive NCAA Tournaments (Steve Henson, Jordan Henriquez and Martavious Irving).
