EDMOND, Okla. -- Central Oklahoma scored game-winning runs in its final at-bats in both games as the Ichaobds were swept in a doubleheader Saturday to open a three-game series. Washburn lost the opener 8-4 and the second game 6-5.
The two will wrap up the series with a single game Sunday at noon. Washburn fell to 9-28 overall and 8-27 in the MIAA.
Brad Alberts put Washburn up 4-1 with a three-run double in the fifth inning of the first game. Taylor Herrington led off the inning with a double and then Connor Crimmins and Riley Price were walked to load the bases. Alberts drove them all in with a hit to left center.
The Bronchos answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and five in the sixth. All five of their runs came with two outs and they got three off a three-run homer that put UCO up for good.
The Ichabods took a 5-2 lead after a three-run seventh inning in the second game. Tyler Bailey and Crimmins had RBI hits and Parker Gibson drove in a run off a grounder.
The Bronchos then scored two in the eighth to tie it and they got the game-winner in the ninth off a bases-loaded single with no outs.
David Gauntt was 2 for 3 in the second game with a solo home run. Gibson and Herrington also had multiple hits in the game. Herrington had four total hits in the doubleheader. Alberts was 2 for 3 in the first game with four RBI.
Taylor Gentry suffered his first loss of the year (3-1) after he gave up the game-winner in the first game. He gave up four hits and five earned runs through 5 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked two. Alberts pitched the final inning of the second game and took the loss to fall to 0-5. Mark Biesma went the first seven innings and gave up three earned runs off nine hits with six strikeouts.
