November 13, 2012-The #19 Emporia State Lady Hornets got 21 points and eight rebounds from Merissa Quick and a double-double from Desiree Wylie in a 77-66 win over Newman on Tuesday night at White Auditorium. It was the 16th straight home opening win for the Lady Hornets.
The Jets took off to start the game with a 7-1 run in the first 2:17 of the game. Newman led 13-12 with 12:29 left in the half when Emporia State went on an 8-0 run fueled by five points from Quick. They would stretch the run to 20-4 with Wylie scoring the last six points of the run to go up 32-17 with 6:06 left in the half.
The Lady Hornet lead would not drop below double figures the rest of the night and grew to 20 points on two occassions. Neither team would score much after the final media timeout, with the Jets outscoring the Lady Hornets 7-3 in the last 4:40 of action.
Emporia State dominated inside, outscoring Newman 36-26 in the paint and outrebounding the Jets 48-39 on the night. Wylie had 12 points and 11 rebounds to record a double-double in her first regular season game as a Lady Hornet. Laura Patrick joined Quick and Wylie in double figures with 12 points and added four assists. Rachel Hanf had nine points on three three-pointers and pulled down seven rebounds.
The Lady Hornets will now travel to Pueblo, Colo. to take part in the CSU-Pueblo Al Kaly Shriners' Classic on Friday and Saturday. Emporia State will open action in the tournament against Western State at 2:00 p.m. (CT) on Friday in Massari Arena. The Lady Hornets will play the host Thunderwolves at approximately 6:00 p.m. (CT) on Saturday.
