Emporia, Kan.-- December 31, 2013-Merissa Quick scored 26 points, with 23 coming in the first half, as the #3 Lady Hornets defeated Baker 95-51 to close out 2013. Emporia State was 30-5 in the calendar year 2013.
The Wildcats took an early 4-1 lead and led 7-3 with 18:20 left in the first half. The Lady Hornets responded with a 13-0 run to take the lead for good. Another 13-0 run gave Emporia State a 34-13 lead with 6:31 left in the frame. A jumper at the buzzer by Quick gave the Lady Hornets a 53-23 lead heading to the locker rooms.
Emporia State scored the first six points of the second half and would lead by as many as 48 points before settling into the 95-51 victory.
Quick was a career best ten of 13 from the free throw line on the way to her game high 26 points and added eight rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Amber Vandiver with 15, Laura Patrick with 12 points and Rheanna Egli with 11 as the Lady Hornets topped 90 points for the second time this year. Desiree Wylie led Emporia State with 12 rebounds.
Emporia State will return to MIAA action on Saturday at Lincoln. Tip-off from Jefferson City, Mo. is set for 1:30 p.m.
Emporia State finished the 2013 calendar year at 30-5 and have won 19 of their last 20 games dating to last season.
The Lady Hornets drew 1,135 fans to the Tuesday afternoon matinee - the 215th straight game dating back to January 2, 1999 that Emporia State has played in front of at least 1,000 fans in White Auditorium.
