Lady Blues Sweep Pair Of Opponents To Open Fall Classic

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Hillary Hughes became the eighth player in Washburn history to get 1,000 kills and digs as she helped the fourth-ranked Lady Blues to a pair of sweeps in the first day of the Fall Classic presented by The Topeka Capitol Plaza Hotel.

The Lady Blues (16-1) beat Southwestern Oklahoma 25-11, 25-17, 25-10 and then swept Southeastern Oklahoma 25-6, 25-14, 25-14 to win their 43rd and 44th straight matches in Lee Arena, extending the school record that goes back to 2009.

Hughes entered the day needing seven kills to reach the elite milestone after she got her 1000th dig earlier in the year. She got three kills against SWOSU and then got six against SEOSU, the fourth putting her in the elite club. She's 16th in the Washburn record book with 1,002 kills and 17th with 1,027 digs. Only seven other Washburn players have reach 1,000 in both categories.

Jessica Fey hit a career-high .786 against the Savage Storm with 11 kills and no errors in 14 attempts. She hit .632 against Southwestern and leads the tournament field with a .697 attack percentage through two matches. She reached double figures in kills in both matches and pushed her career kill total to 995. She'll need five more to become the 17th Lady Blue to reach that milestone after Hughes became the 16th. She'll also need eight blocks to become the ninth Lady Blue to get 1,000 kills and 300 blocks.

The Lady Blues hit above .400 in both their matches and averaged a .422 attack on day one. No other team was able to top .300 in their two matches.

Jessica Kopp hit .488 and pushed her streak to six straight matches with double figure kills after getting 11 against Southwestern and 14 against Southeastern.

Hughes became the third player that head coach Chris Herron has led to 1,000 kills and digs. The other two were Dani McHenry (2002-04) and Monica Miesner (2004-08). The last player to reach 1,000 kills was Breanna Lewis last November.

Washburn improved to 26-0 in the Lady Blues Fall Classic in the seventh year of hosting it. The Lady Blues will go for two more wins when they host Harding at 11 a.m. and Southern Nazarene at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
