Lady Blues Erase 12-Point Deficit To Close Capitol Plaza Classic With Win Over Arkansas Tech

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Lady Blues trailed by 12 points in the first half but out-scored Arkansas Tech by 16 in the second half in a 77-65 win Saturday at Schendel Court at Lee Arena.

The 13th-ranked Lady Blues finished the Topeka Capitol Plaza Hotel Thanksgiving Classic 2-0 and improved to 4-0 overall. Washburn will return to action December 3 at 7 p.m. against Benedictine.

Tiara George had her first career double-double as she had career highs of 22 points and 14 rebounds. She's now reached double figures in all four of Washburn's games. Laura Kinderknecht also had her fourth straight double-figure scoring game with 16 points and Dana Elliott added 11.

Freshman Jordan Baldwin had a career high with nine points as she hit three 3-pointers. After the Golden Suns (1-2) built their biggest lead of the game, 36-24 with 4:26 left in the first half, Baldwin hit two straight 3s for Washburn to cut the lead to six.

Washburn went into the locker room down four at 39-35 and responded with a 6-0 run to start the second half that gave the Lady Blues a 41-39 lead. George's lay-up ended the run, giving Washburn its first advantage of the night.

The Golden Suns regained the lead three more times after that, but never by more than a point. Two free throws from Brittney Lynch recovered the lead for good for Washburn at 9:02 and a 3 from Baldwin a minute later gave Washburn a six-point lead.

Arkansas Tech kept it close and was down by just four at the two minute mark. Kinderknecht hit a 3-pointer at 1:53 to push the lead to seven and she then hit a pair of free throws a minute later to make it nine. The Golden Suns scored just once more after that and a free throw from Elliott pushed the lead to double digits for Washburn with 14 seconds left.

The Lady Blues shot 43 percent in the game while ATU shot 44 percent. Rebounding was close with Washburn holding a 39-33 advantage and the Lady Blues made 73 percent (16 of 22) of their free throws while ATU made 69 percent (11 of 16).

Casyn Buchman led Washburn with six assists and Kinderknecht added five.

Jessica Weatherford led the Golden Suns with 23 points and six rebounds. Westin Taylor added 15.
