MANHATTAN, Kan. – Olympic silver medalist Erik Kynard made his return to the runway on Saturday as he flew over the bar at 2.29 meters (7 feet 6 inches) to win the Wildcat Invitational and on Wednesday he was named the Big 12 Athlete of the Week for his efforts. His jump is the highest in the NCAA this season and broke the collegiate dual meet record.
Kynard was the only competitor left when he entered the contest at 2.13 meters easily clearing on his first attempt. He also soared over the bar on first attempts at 2.18 meters and 2.23 meters before making 2.29 on his third attempt.
This is Kynard’s third Big 12 Athlete of the Week award in his career combining indoor and outdoor seasons. It is his second indoor award and first since his sophomore season.
Kynard and the Wildcats will be in action this week at the Bill Bergan Invitational at Iowa State beginning with combined events on Thursday and Friday. He is scheduled to jump at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
