TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - University of Kansas head football coach Charlie Weis refused to make any bold predictions about how his team would perform this fall, but he did speak of the program's evolution as he enters his third season at the helm.

Weis appeared Wednesday evening at the Topeka Jayhawk Club's spring football preview. Media was not allowed inside the event, but Weis spent about 10 minutes answering questions from reports beforehand.

Asked about the situation at quarterback, where former starter Jake Heaps has reportedly expressed a desire to transfer from KU, Weis declined to comment, saying he wouldn't talk about specific team personnel. Instead, Weis said he wanted to give people some insight into his approach to making the team better.

"You go 1-11 the first year, 3-9 the second year, you don't come out here and say we're gonna win 10," Weis said. "You just say here's what you did the first year to make it better and the second, and, now we're gonna go to the third year. What's the next phase? Because the bottom line is you want to win more football games."

Asked later about transfers in general and why the quarterback position seemed to draw a lot of discussion on the issue, Weis conceded that, while teams may occasionally draw plays for a second person under center, an offense is built around having one guy be the quarterback. If you're not "the guy," Weis said, you might be inclined to go where you have a better chance of playing.

In late April, ESPN reported Heaps would leave KU. After spring workouts, Weis announced sophomore Montell Cozart would lead the offense this fall.
