CORVALLIS, Ore. – Kansas State second baseman Ross Kivett, the 2013 Big 12 Player of the Year, was selected in the 10th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft by the Cleveland Indians with the 291st overall pick Friday.

Coupled with Jared King’s selection in the fifth round by the New York Mets earlier in the day, K-State has now had at least two players selected in the top-10 rounds in two of the last three years. In 2011, Jason King (Detroit) and Evan Marshall (Arizona) were each drafted in the fourth round, while Nick Martini (St. Louis) and James Allen (Cincinnati) were taken in the seventh round.

Kivett is the sixth Kansas State player drafted by the Indians, including the third since 2006, joining Jared Goedert (2006) and Daniel Edwards (2007).

A Cleveland-area product out of Broadview Heights, Ohio, Kivett enters the Corvallis Super Regional hitting .363 with 13 doubles, four triples, three home runs and 39 RBI. The leadoff hitter holds a .444 on-base percentage, has scored 54 runs and leads the team with 26 steals in 36 attempts. Named an All-American by Collegiate Baseball, Kivett earned MVP honors at last week’s Manhattan Regional by going 6-for-12 with two home runs and five RBI.

Kivett, who holds a career .323 batting average, has set the single-season school record for at-bats (248), ranks fourth in hits (90) and third singles (70). In addition, he has 59 career steals to rank fourth in K-State history.

Rounds 11-40 of the 2013 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft will be conducted Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. (CT) and can be followed at www.mlb.com.

The 13th-ranked Wildcats take on No. 3 national seed Oregon State in a best-of-three series in the Corvallis Super Regional, Saturday through Monday, at Goss Stadium in Corvallis, Ore. The series begins with a 6 p.m. (CT) contest Saturday, and continues at 9 p.m. (CT) Sunday. If necessary, a decisive third game will be played at 6 p.m. (CT) Monday. All three games will be shown on ESPNU and can be heard on both the K-State Sports Network and www.k-statesports.com.
