K-State Returns Home To Host Iowa In Big 12/Big Ten Challenge

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State returns to Bramlage on Saturday for the first of two home games in the month of December, as the Wildcats host Iowa at 7 p.m., for the Big 12/Big Ten Challenge. Fans can take part in the “Wildcat Weekend,” as general admission tickets can be purchased for $3 when fans show a football game ticket from the Dec. 3 Iowa State game.

Saturday evening’s contest will be broadcast on FS Kansas City, as Brian Smoller and Missy Heidrick call the action. This will be the 150th K-State women’s basketball game to be broadcast on television, with K-State holding an all-time record of 91-58 (.611) in televised games, including a 1-0 mark in televised contests this season. The Wildcats are 58-40 (.592) on the FSN family of networks, including a 8-2 mark in 2010-11.

The contest will also be available on the K-State Sports Network, as Matt Walters delivers the play-by-play and former Wildcat Danielle Zanotti will handle the color analysis.

K-State will look to shake off a pair of losses from the Cancun Challenge on Nov. 24-25. The Wildcats fell to Hofstra in its opening game, 64-54, then fell in overtime to No. 15/17 Purdue, 46-42. K-State was led in the two games in Mexico by senior forward Jalana Childs. The product of Orlando, Fla., averaged 21.5 points per game and 7.5 rebounds. Against Hofstra, Childs recorded her third career double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Against the Boilermakers, Childs carded a career-high 23 points on 11-of-20 shooting. For the season, Childs is averaging 15.8 points per game and 7.6 rebounds.

Joining Childs in double figures this season are junior Brittany Chambers and senior Tasha Dickey. Chambers is averaging 11.6 points per game and needs 40 points to become the 37th 1,000-point scorer in school history. Against Purdue, Chambers notched her fifth career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. During the Cancun Challenge, she also climbed the career assist chart, as she now owns a total 175 career assists to rank 29th.

Dickey, a transfer from Arizona, is averaging 10.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game. Against Hofstra, Dickey tallied her third double figure scoring game this season with 15 points.

Following Saturday night’s game against the Hawkeyes, the Wildcats will close out its two-game home stand against Wichita State. K-State will host the Shockers at 7 p.m.

Wildcats Turning Steals into Baskets

Kansas State has been adept through the first five games this season in taking the ball away from its opponents. The Wildcats are averaging 10.4 steals per game and have tallied a total of 52 steals in the first five contests. K-State ranks 5th in the Big 12 in steals and 108th in the nation. The Wildcats have notched double figures in steals in three of the first five games, including a season-high 17 against Dartmouth in the season-opener.

The last time K-State had at least 50 steals following the first five games of a season was in 2004-05 when the Wildcats notched 63 thefts. In the Deb Patterson era, K-State has tallied 50 or more steals after five games just four times.

K-State has taken advantage of the extra possessions by scoring 75 points off its opponents turnovers this season (15 ppg).
