MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State men's golf team improved 26 strokes from round one to round two Monday and currently sits atop the leaderboard in the 2013 Jim Colbert Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,486-yard Colbert Hills Golf Course.
Playing in the lone home event of the season, K-State carded a second-round 2-under 286 – the lowest 18-hole score of the day – to finish Monday’s action two shots ahead of Sam Houston State.
“It was a big turnaround from this morning to this afternoon,” said head coach Tim Norris. “We have to come out tomorrow and play this way again. We need to play with some urgency because a two-stroke margin can evaporate pretty quickly out here. I am proud of the effort, but we just have to execute better for 18 holes.”
Playing as an individual, Alex Carney turned in the lowest score of the day for K-State as he fired an even-par 144, which included a first-round 2-under 70. Carney will enter the final round of play trialing event leader Zach Cabra of Sam Houston State by four strokes.
Competing for the first time this year, Matt Green turned in a second-round 5-under 67, improving 12 strokes from his first-round 7-over 79. Green will enter Tuesday’s final round in third place. Daniel Wood currently sits in fourth place after he carded a 4-over 148 on Monday, while Kyle Weldon recorded 8-over 152 and ended Monday’s action in a four-way tie for 10th place.
Rounding out the scoring lineup for the Wildcats were David Klaudt and Tyler Norris, who finished the first two rounds of action in a tie for 14th place and 21st place, respectively. Klaudt tallied a 9-over 153 while Norris turned in a 12-over 156.
Playing in their first collegiate tournament, freshmen Connor Knabe and Seth Smith finished Monday in the top 30. Knabe (T27th) carded a 14-over 158 while Smith (T30th) tallied a 15-over 159.
Final-round action from Colbert Hills will begin Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start. Post-event recaps and results of the 2013 Jim Colbert Intercollegiate will be available at kstatesports.com at the conclusion of play on Tuesday.
