MERIDEN, Kan. (WIBW) - The Jefferson West High School softball team is making the program's first-ever trip to state. The Tigers are the top seed in 4A-II.

The team's only loss of the season came in a split doubleheader against Royal Valley.

Senior Victoria Johnson says the team had extra motivation to make it to state this season after falling essentially a pitch shy in last year's regional final. She says she and her teammates have a good bond and are bolstered by playing tough competition throughout the year.

Coach Chad Jackson says his team is a fun-loving group, but they also know how to focus once the first pitch is thrown. He says it's obvious they've thousands of hours at the diamonds working to improve their skills and knowledge.

Jeff West opens state play Thursday against Chapman in Pratt. If they win, they could potentiall face league foe Santa Fe Trail in the state semi-final.
