TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Ichabods suffered a pair of shutouts Saturday at Falley Field as Southwest Baptist took a doubleheader, 4-0 and 5-0 to open a four-game series.
The two teams will now play Sunday at 11 a.m. instead of 1 p.m. to avoid potential rain and storms in the late afternoon. The first game will be a nine-inning MIAA game and the second game will be a seven-inning non-conference game.
Washburn fell to 7-26 overall and 7-25 in the MIAA while the Bearcats improved to 16-19 and 13-14 in the league.
The Ichabods got just three hits in the opener and six in the second game. Kyle Carnahan had the only extra-base hit for Washburn as he had a two-out triple in the seventh of game two.
Washburn was kept without a baserunner the first three innings of the second game and finally put together a threat in the sixth inning when Zackary Haller and Parker Gibson each had infield singles. Washburn followed with two straight outs after that.
Mark Biesma (1-4) pitched a complete game in the opener and gave up two runs in the first and seventh innings. He allowed eight hits with six strikeouts and three walks. The Ichabods couldn't give him any support as they only had singles in the first, second and fourth innings and went down in order in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh.
Drew Ridley went the first 5 2/3 innings of game two and fell to 1-5. He allowed four runs off seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
Both Bearcat starters pitched complete games.
